Points of Interest (POI)
We curate and update nationwide information about local and regional destinations from various public and proprietary sources. These points of interest (POIs) may include hotels, airports, gas stations, and others.
We summarize POIs in a geography in various ways:
For counts of POIs, we calculate the number of POIs based on a spatial intersection with the geography of interest.
For the density of POIs, we compute the number of points divided by the land area of the geography. If there are no such POIs within the geography, the value is 0.
For some important types of POIs (such as hospitals), we include a metric defined as: “This point of interest exists somewhere in the geography.” This metric is equivalent to the count of a given type of POI being greater than 0.
For some major POIs (such as airports), we calculate metrics for the "distance to the nearest such POI within a given distance." We calculate this metric as the straight-line distance from the centroid of the geography to the POI. If no such destinations are within the threshold distance, the value is Null.
